A long history and brilliant civilization create Chinese treasure ——intangible cultural heritage. Pudong New Area has been the trial reserve for Shanghai intangible cultural heritage. In order to help students appreciate the previous heritage and keep it alive, our school organized our students to participate in a series of activities called “Pudong in the Eyes of Overseas Students”, hosted by Pudong New Area Education Bureau, Culture and Sports Bureau, and Travel Bureau.

On November 25th, led by the Chinese teacher, our 10th graders of the English section came to the studio of Zhang yuqi, successor of ancient boat models handcraft, where they appreciated the ancient models and also got engaged in its making.

Our students walked around in the studio, seeing a wide variety of ancient boat models and listening to the story behind every model. With the introduction of Mr.Zhang yuqi,our students gained a sight into the techniques of handcrafts.

Then, it was the “show”time for our students. After watching Mr. Zhangyuqi’s works of art, they couldn’t wait to do it themselves. Therefore, Mr. Zhang selected a special model called “Jiangnan fishing boat”, with which our students could fully feel the ancient Chinese ship-making techniques.

Looking at the design map of the ship model seriously, our students were absorbed in making their own ancient ship models. With the guidance of the teachers, they finally created their own product.

 Take out spare parts of the models carefully.

Piece together the spare parts, hoping to perfect every detail.

Win or lose, it all depends on the sail.

This activity not only enables our students to understand ancient Chinese ship building techniques, but gives us access to a hands-on experience. Hopefully, our students can keep up their passion in its further study and keep this Chinese treasure alive.
